Alain officially became a US citizen today. The official ceremony was really quite dry and uninteresting. The music in the ceremony room was Michael Jackson. Strange. I thought about the official’s question to the immigrants about what it means to them to become American. Mostly, they answered freedom and safety. A man in his 80’s said, “a future”. We forget having lived here for so long that in many countries people fear for their safety and are not able to live freely. I just hope that with this new administration that the America that is projected to the outside world is one that is more tolerant and more respectful of others cultures. For what we promise to immigrants coming here is that they have freedom to be who they are and that their way of life will be respected. Why can’t we seem to do that abroad?
